Welcome to Health Watch News where we take you across the globe in search of people and companies that are making a positive difference on our lives. I'm ________.

Anchor 2:

And I'm __________. On today's program we look at an amazing new product that is set to revolutionize the lives of the millions of people who suffer from fibromyalgia.

With more on that story is reporter ________________.

Pics of people going for a jog, taking a stroll, fishing, biking (from existing VNR)

Reporter VO:

Feeling the wind at your back, taking time to swim, play tennis or just enjoy a walk in the park. Many of us take these activities for granted. But for 11 million people [reference 1f] who suffer from fibromyalgia, even taking a stroll can be painful.

Reporter VO:

According to the National Fibromyalgia Association, family doctors see at least one person with fibromyalgia every day [reference 1e], a disorder that costs the US economy as much as $10 billion in lost productivity [reference 1e].

Jessie Jones Prompt question: How did the disease affect you?

“It was the constant aching, and sleeplessness that affected me the most.”

“I just became so exhausted that I couldn't function and handle all of the daily responsibilities of my job. When my sick leave ran out, I had to take disability leave.”

Shots of people sitting on bench.

Shot of pharmacist filling prescription.

Reporter on cam:

People who have fibromyalgia suffer constant pain but treatment choices are limited. Many painkillers don't work or have disturbing side-effects.

Reporter VO:

Now Swiss Medica, the maker of 024 Pain Neutralizer and PMS Escape, has launched O24 Fibromyalgia — an all-natural pain reliever that has been clinically shown to relieve fibromyalgia pain. And it has users taking back their lives.

Jessie Jones in her office with product to her immediate left on desk.

Jessie Jones on camera:

When did you first start experiencing pain and when was fibromyalgia diagnosed?

Jessie Jones answers to the effect of:

“I started experiencing pain in the early 1990s which just never went away. It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I was finally diagnosed with fibromyalgia.”

What do you think of 024 Fibromyalgia and why do you like it?

“I've tried a lot of products over the years to reduce my pain; finally I discovered O24 Fibromyalgia. With the use of 024 Fibromyalgia I'm able to move more freely without as much pain and with no negative side effects like with medications. By using 024 I can now make it through a full day of work.”

Shots of the product...

...focus in on the seal of approval.

Reporter VO:

Unlike many other natural products for fibromyalgia, O24 Fibromyalgia has been shown to be effective in independent clinical testing.

As a result, 024 Fibromyalgia has been awarded the National Fibromyalgia Association's seal of approval, making it the first product of its kind to receive this distinction.

Shots from VNR of Lynne Matallana in her office.

Lynne Matallana

President, National Fibromyalgia Association

Lynne Matallana, President, NFA:

O24 Fibromyalgia has been clinically proven to help reduce the pain of fibromyalgia. And because of that the NFA has been willing to give it its seal of approval.

One of the reasons why we've gotten involved with Swiss Medica and O24 Fibromyalgia is because of their dedication and commitment to continued research in the field of fibromyalgia.

So as we move forward we are very excited. We're already working on a clinical trial to help look at fibromyalgia and O24 and helping to improve the ability to exercise and to minimize pain.

  • 3 months of widespread pain
  • pain in at least 11 of 18 tender-point sites.

Reporter VO:

There are no specific tests for fibromyalgia, so the condition has been widely misunderstood in the past.

Doctors now make a diagnosis of fibromyalgia based on:

A history of widespread pain that is present for at least 3 months; and pain in at least 11 of the 18 so-called “tender-point” sites. [reference 2b]

Dr. Gordon Ko

Medical Director, Fibromyalgia Treatment Clinic, Toronto and researcher, University of Toronto

Dr. Ko on cam:

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome or condition. It affects about 2-5% of the population, 90% of whom are females. Many of whom are what I call baby-boomer age; in their 50s and late 40s.

B-roll drawing of person with points of pain flared in red [Reference 7w].

Shot of Dr. Gordon Ko treating a patient (from VNR).

Dr. Ko v/o:

We find that the fibromyalgia sufferer will describe pain in, diffusely all over the body, will have associated problems with sleep, they'll have associated conditions like problems with their bowels, irritable bowel syndrome.

Often times they'll describe other pain conditions, like jaw pain, what we call tempromandibular joint pain, carpel tunnel syndrome which is pins and needles in their hands, numbness, and tingling in their hands and feet.

Reporter VO:

To manage their pain, fibromyalgia patients commonly try over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen, or powerful prescription drugs such as anticonvulsants or antidepressants. [Reference 3c]

Reporter on cam.

Reporter on cam:

Unfortunately, many of these drugs can have disturbing side effects [references 3g, 4j, 4l, 4m] or may be dangerous in combination with other medications. Often, sufferers turn to alternative therapies that make big promises but simply don't work. [Reference 4k, 4x]

With this kind of background, clinical testing for O24 Fibromyalgia was essential, says Swiss Medica President, Grant Johnson.

Grant Johnson, on cam:

Prompt question: Why this, why now?

Grant Johnson's answers to the effect of:

“We are filling a very necessary niche here — a community that has been overlooked for a long time. Unlike a lot of other alternatives out there, O24 Fibromyalgia has been clinically tested and shown to be both effective and safe.”

Reporter on cam

Reporter on cam:

O24 Fibromyalgia has, not once, but twice been clinically tested — and has produced results that have been published internationally.

[Graphic build]

  • German pilot study
  • pain intensity reduced almost 40%
  • no reported side effects

Reporter VO:

A pilot study by German researchers in the 90's showed that 024 Fibromyalgia provided significant pain relief in 61%, or two-thirds, of the women tested [Reference 5n].

The results of this study appear in the German journal Optimisten .

[Pic of University of Toronto]

Reporter VO:

In 2004, a second larger clinical trial at the University of Toronto headed by Dr. Gordon Ko also showed that O24 Fibromyalgia was effective at relieving fibromyalgia pain.

Dr. Gordon Ko

Dr. Gordon Ko, on camera :

As an alternative to oral drugs for chronic pain, we did do a randomized clinical trial on topical essential oils, topical O24 essential oils for fibromyalgia and out of the 133 participants in the study the group that actually got the true essentials oils had a significant reduction in pain, especially nighttime pain.

[Build bullets:] “Average pain scores”

  • 024 Fibromyalgia: 5.6 (mildly to moderately better)

  • Placebo treatment: 3.9 (no change)

[Reference 6v]

Reporter VO:

Over the month-long study, patients taking O24 Fibromyalgia rated their pain, on average, mildly or moderately better. By contrast, patients taking the 'dummy' or placebo treatment experienced no change. [Reference 6v]

Dr. Gordon Ko on cam

Dr. Ko on camera:

We also found that they rated the product as being up to markedly helpful with the majority of patients having no significant side effects.

There was improvement in their ability to do things, and their ability to enjoy their quality of life, and the outcome measures were statistically significant.

Certainly for my first time Fibromyalgia patient with mild to moderate pain I would recommend topical O24 essential oil.

Reporter on cam

Reporter on cam:

Since this interview, the results of the study have been published in an American medical journal, Practical Pain Management [Grant please note this journal is not peer-reviewed or indexed on Medline].

Grant Johnson on cam:

Prompt questions:

What makes you proud about this product?

What does this mean for people with fibromyalgia?

“We're very proud of our product. O24 Fibromyalgia has achieved ‘three firsts' in one product: it's the first product specifically designed for the millions of fibromyalgia sufferers; it's the first commercialized product that has been clinically shown to reduce fibromyalgia specific pain; and it's the first product to carry the National Fibromyalgia Association's seal of approval.”

“This is a big step forward for the fibromyalgia community. The product is a safe, effective and completely natural way to help manage fibromyalgia pain.”

Grant Johnson with product poster in background, product line to left, and O24FM in hand

How do you feel about the NFA partnership with your product?

“This relationship is very important to Swiss Medica for several reasons. For example: they provide us with feedback and advice as we continue our R&D on products for the fibromyalgia community.

As the national voice of this community, the NFA is also very helpful in advising Swiss Medica on the best way to communicate with the people who have fibromyalgia.”

The secret to the success of O24 Fibromyalgia lies in its patented blend of natural oils...

including camphor oil, eucalyptus, aloe vera, peppermint, rosemary, lemon oil and orange oil.

Studies over the years have shown that all these oils can soothe pain. For example, aloe vera is used for burns and frostbite [Reference 6s], while peppermint oil relieves headaches [Reference 6t].

When you use O24 Fibromyalgia, these all-natural ingredients work together within minutes to provide effective pain relief.

[Richard Weise qualifications]

Richard Weise on camera:

“I came up with the idea of a pain-relief product when I was in my 20s. I, like many people, don't like to take pills for pain because of the potential side effects. I researched and tested for 30 years and in 1992 O24 was finally developed.”

“O24 Fibromyalgia is a patented product that is derived of some of the best-sourced natural ingredients that include white camphor oil, eucalyptus, aloe vera, peppermint, rosemary, lemon oil and orange oil.”

“We only use the very purest forms of these oils. For example, we only use white camphor oil which is far superior in quality to the brown or yellow camphor commonly used in many other products.”

Pics of the product and hands demonstrating the use of the product.

Reporter VO:

O24 can be purchased as either a spray or convenient towelette. Simply apply where it hurts.

It can also be added to bath water as part of a relaxing routine.

Jessie on cam with product to her immediate left on desk.

Jessie Jones prompt questions:

When were you diagnosed, and how did you find the available treatments?

How did you feel about your situation?

“When I was first diagnosed with fibromyalgia, I was using muscle relaxants and found that with all the side-effects — dizziness, nausea, difficulty with concentration — the drawbacks were outweighing the benefits.”

“I mean, here I was taking something to take away my pain, but instead it added to it.”

Prompt question: When did you start using O24?

“I first started using O24 for my fibromyalgia pain in 1995.”

How did fibromyalgia affect you and how did O24 change your life?

“Before, I needed to take days off due to the pain and my career was suffering as a result. Now, I apply the spray at night before bedtime and find that I get a more comfortable night's sleep.”

“I don't have to worry about uncomfortable side-effects or interactions with other drugs.”

“Most importantly, I don't have to worry that the pain will get in the way of having a normal life. I no longer have to plan my life around my pain. And what a relief - no more living on disability!”

Did you recommend it to anyone else?

"I've even started recommending to my older adult clients who have neuromuscular pain — at our Center for Successful Aging — to use it at night and before coming to exercise. They find it really helpful."

Jessie Jones on camera:

Prompt questions: Overall, what effect has 024 Fibromyalgia had on your life?

Jessie Jones' answer to the effect of:

“It has given me my mobility back. It has given me my life back.”
